Accent Reduction for

Foreign Speakers of English

For Non-Native Speakers of English who would like to develop

Standard American Speech.

Work intensively on particular consonant and vowel sounds which are different from the sounds in your first language.  Sound substitutions and omissions are identified, and the correct sounds are drilled.  Listening discrimination exercises are used in addition to speaking exercises.

Learn the patterns of American rhythm and intonation.  Know which syllables and words to stress, how to stress them, how to shape a phrase, and how to speak  smoothly, rather than word-by-word.

Acquire a voice which is strong, mature, confident, professional, and pleasant -- and which sounds American in its tone, focus, quality, and resonance.

Improve your English.  Be grammatically correct at all times and use individual words and idioms correctly.  Phrase thoughts, questions, requests, and responses in ways that are logical and that achieve the desired responses from your listeners.

Improve communication skills such as initiating and ending a conversation, introducing yourself to a prospective client, calling for information, interviewing for a job, or making a presentation.

         Additional Features of Accent Training

A specific list of drills and exercises is assigned for practice each week, and clients are taught how to practice each day.

Each session is recorded, and the client is then given a tape of the session to review and use for practice.

The symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) are used to identify vowels and consonants accurately.

Specific exercises and assignments are given to help you apply what you are learning to your daily communication outside of the studio.

The training materials are comprehensive, covering voice, articulation, rhythm, intonation, grammar, and practical application.

The training materials have been developed over many years, incorporating solutions to the problems that many former clients have overcome.  So you will benefit from Brian’s long experience working with many other people, some of whom may have had the same problems that you have.

You can choose to soften and modify your accent, or you can acquire Standard American Speech completely.  Further, you can also learn to speak General American Speech, which is a more relaxed, informal version of Standard Speech.
